在歐洲中世紀（medieval）時，史卡布諾（Scarborough）是位居英格蘭北部北約克郡，面臨北海的一個市容繁盛的港口，每年自八月中起，有長達一個半月的集市（Fair），它的規模有點像現今的博覽會，不但英國人，連歐陸的人都會趕來參加此一盛大的貿易集會。現今，它僅是個寧靜的觀光小鎮，以往傳統的盛況不再，九月時還舉行象徵性的紀念活動。

【Scarborough】：可拆為Scar + borough
【scar】：傷痕
【borough】：英 市鎮。美 區。例：紐約市共有五個區 Manhattan（曼哈頓），The Bronx（布朗），Brooklyn（布魯克林），Queens（皇后），Staten Island（史坦頓島）
1963 賽門在倫敦時從英國民歌手 Martin Carthy 那裡，初次接觸到這首19世紀的歌曲。1966與葛芬柯灌成唱片“Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme”，本來男女二人對唱的詞，經他們的改編，變成男子單方唱的。1968被達斯汀赫夫曼主演的「畢業生」（The Graduate）錄在電影聲帶裡後，始發行單曲唱片。
這首歌可追根溯源到1670年已失傳的蘇格蘭民謠“The Elfin Knight”，它有著類似的故事情節，那時（清康熙九年）的英國人跟我們祖先一樣，好的詩詞歌謠於發表後，大家競相抄錄流傳，到後來也不知道這首歌是誰寫的。就這樣經過各個城鎮間傳來傳去，不斷的修改、重寫，現在有十幾種不同版本。
它主要是在敘述一個年青男子的故事，他請聽他唱的人，去要求他的舊情人做一些辦不到的事，如要她做一件沒有接縫的襯衫，然後拿到乾枯的水井裡去洗乾凈，如做成了，就與她重溫舊夢。一般是用二重唱的，女子接著也要求她的情人完成一連串同樣不可能的任務後才要給他，他所想要的襯衫。
歌詞中重覆句 “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme”是較近期版本才有的。
最早的是：“my plaid away, my plaid away, the wind shall not blow my plaid away”plaid：彩格披肩
後來又有：“Sober and grave grows merry in time”
【in time】：1.經過相當久的時間。2.從現在起算的某一時間
“Every rose grows merry with time”
【with time】：逐漸形成或逐漸改變
“There's never a rose grows fairer with time”
【fair】：美麗的
很可能上述的某一種唱法，後來失傳了，而改用“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme”來替代。
這首民謠歌曲中所提到的這四種植物所代表的意義，專家們有不同的見解
隱喻說
男子借以說明如她能完成三項不可能的任務後，她為什麼應該回到他身邊。
Parsley ：I'm yours 我是屬於你的
Sage：I'm dependable 我是靠得住的
Rosemary：Remember me 把我常記你心
Thyme：I want to have children with you 一起生兒育女
象徵說
認為它們代表特殊的意義
Parsley：有助消化（digestive aid），除卻苦痛（take away the bitterness）
Sage：無比的力量（strength for thousands of years）
Rosemary：忠誠（faithfulness），愛及思念（remembrance）。今日英國女子當新娘子的那天仍流行在頭髮上插戴這種花
Thyme：勇氣。中世紀的騎士（knights）作戰時所持盾牌常繪刻此花圖案（wear images of thyme on their shields）
唱者提及這四種植物，希望以他溫柔的真愛來平撫他們之間的痛苦，以他.的力量來對抗分離期間拆散他們的外力，要她在這段孤獨寂寞的日子裡，為他苦守寒窯。另一方面又相當矛盾地鼓勵她去完成不可能的任務，並於達成後回到他身邊。
法力說
認為這四種植物具有魔法力量，它們都與死亡有關，及可當作吉祥符（charms），用來化解對你懷有憤恨眼光人的仇意（against the evil eye）。

後記
1. parsley 荷蘭芹，sage 鼠尾草，rosemary 迷迭香，thyme 百里香，這些做成烹飪用的香料，在大賣場中都有小瓶裝的在賣。
2. 最近參加英格蘭、蘇格蘭十天團體的旅遊，曾向遊覽車司機先生打聽 Scarborough，他說就在離他現在住的 York 不遠的地方，還搬出地圖讓我看位置。喜歡自由行的人，要先到 York 再換車。如從倫敦坐 bus，全程約需六、七小時。
3.如果有既悠閑又深入的只涵蓋牛津大學，劍橋大學，莎士比亞及 Scarborough Fair 四大主題，七天五、六萬元的英格蘭團體行程，英國應該是一個值得一遊再遊的國家。
